I’ve been wracking my brain trying to come up with an Easter treat that is delicious and chocolaty yet super healthy and MS diet friendly. I wanted it to be something that I and my children would enjoy eating and making together. After a little experimentation, the Easter Chocolate Nests were born!

This time of year can be tricky with so many chocolates around. It can be so tempting to just pop one of those small, seemingly harmless little chocolate eggs in your mouth. The problem is that it doesn’t end with just one. As most of us know, sugar is addictive and once we’ve had one chocolate, our bodies will start crying out for more. We’ll either give in and eat another three or four or we’ll be left feeling frustrated and annoyed that we can’t just enjoy what everyone else is enjoying. It’s a lose-lose situation. It’s best to steer completely clear!

Luckily, there are some really fabulous MS diet alternatives and this recipe is one of them. I made it with my kids a few days ago and it was an instant hit. They did put a few of their tiny chocolate eggs inside their finished nests but I didn’t mind too much because I knew they were getting a good dose of goodness. The nests were gone in a flash and my son and I had a little battle over the last one with him getting highly annoyed that I ‘stole’ a large chunk. I have to say that it does thrill me to see them enjoying healthy treats!

These chocolate nests are full, to the brim, with goodness. They are completely raw which makes them quick to make and a lot more nutritious. The super food ingredients are chia seeds and raw cacao. Chia seeds are a good source of omega 3’s and plant protein. Cacao is potently packed with antioxidants to kill off those nasty disease causing free radicals. The almonds, cashews, oats, maple syrup and coconut are also highly nutritious ingredients that will keep you energised and focused

Tomorrow is Good Friday and my kids and I are going to make large batch of them to see us through the weekend  and share with our friends. Easter is a special time and it’s extra special when there are some healthy treats around!

Makes: 12 nests



4 Tbsp coconut oil

2-3 Tbsp raw cacao powder (depending on how chocolatey you like them)

2 Tbsp almond butter

2-3 Tbsp maple syrup

1/2 cup gluten-free oats

1/2 cup desiccated coconut (organic is best as it’s preservative-free)

1/4 cup  chopped almonds

1/4 cup chopped cashews

1 Tbsp chia seeds



  1. Melt the coconut oil over  a very low heat or over a bowl of hot water.
  2. Mix in the almond butter, cacao and maple syrup until a smooth, rich and decadent chocolate mixture has formed. This mixture is wonderful because it can actually be used to make raw chocolate, chocolate icing and ganache. It’s amazing!
  3. Add all the dry ingredients to the chocolate mixture and stir until fully combined and beautifully chocolaty!
  4. Divide the mixture into a muffin pan or 12 cup cake cases. Don’t worry if it doesn’t stick together very well. Once set, it will be firmly stuck together.
  5. Place in the fridge or freezer until set and then enjoy!
